Democratizing Financial Services: An Inside Look at the Founder & CEO of GuardianWealth

Born and raised in Nigeria, Ulunma Onokala Izejiobi has always been eager to break the status quo and make a difference.

Onokala Izejiobi came to the United States at 17-years-old to attend college at Angelo State University, where she graduated summa cum laude. Following graduation, she was hired full-time as an investment officer at a private equity firm where she became the youngest investment professional to manage a portfolio company.

Ulunma loved the responsibilities and challenges that were thrown her way while working in private equity, however, she wanted to dig deeper and find a way to use her knowledge to help others. She set her sights on Harvard Business School to get her MBA and advance her career. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Ulunma’s eyes were opened to the socioeconomic divide in the United States; many of her peers at Harvard Business School were becoming wealthier as the stock market rebounded, while many people of color were losing their jobs and their financial stability. Ulunma stated that people of color are 2.3 times less likely than white people to invest in the stock market.

She wanted to create a new and approachable way for everyone—no matter their age, gender, ethnicity, etc.— to gain financial knowledge and support. As she finished her MBA, Ulunma developed GuardianWealth; an app that uses AI technology to leverage 24/7 financial planning and assistance to users.

GuardianWealth helps its users improve their financial knowledge, through a highly-customizable financial literacy and wellness program; save with friends, family and peers, while boosting their credit score; plan for financial goals; and invest for wealth creation.
